A federal tax credit of 30% of the cost of installing ev charging equipment, which had expired december 31, 2016, has been retroactively extended through december 31, 2020. The maximum credit is $1,000 per residential electric car charging station and $10,000 for each public fueling station.

The credit begins to phase out for a manufacturer, when that manufacturer sells 200,000 qualified vehicles. This is in addition to a separate federal tax credit for 30 percent of the charger’s cost and installation, topping out at $1,000.

And through at least the end of 2020, the federal government is offering an alternative fuel vehicle refueling property credit that gives property owners a federal tax credit of up to $1,000 to install a home charging station. No there is no federal tax credit for installing an electric car charger at your home in 2018.

The credits will cover 30% of the cost to install an ev charger with a maximum credit of $1,000 for individual taxpayers and $30,000 for businesses. Federal purchase incentive bev and phev cars purchased in or after 2010 are eligible for a federal income tax credit of up to $7,500.
